In the first half of Sunday’s 2-1 triumph for Liverpool at St. James’ Park, the Netherlands’ center back was dismissed for a foul on Alexander Isak. Van Dijk argued with referee John Brooks after first refusing to leave the field.

He will be automatically suspended for one match, which he must serve this weekend against Aston Villa, although the penalty may be extended.

The defender is claimed to have behaved improperly and/or spoken abusively or insultingly to a match official, according to the FA.

Van Dijk has till this Friday to answer the accusation.
